Project Outline
For this project, I am taking pictures of the names of as many cars as possible. Once I am
satisfied that I have enough names, I will combine the images into a collage. Mustang, Firebird,
735i, Skylark, and Civic are examples of car names.
I'm not including the names of car
companies like Ford, Chevy, or Honda. I make exceptions if the name of the car at the time was also
the name of the company. I am including both old and new, foreign and domestic, shiny and rusty
car names. When I say "car", I mean it in a very general way. F-150, Tacoma, Suburban,
Jimmy, and other such vehicles are included as well. I hope to have close to 500 names
before I start the collage. In total, I need over 700 names.
Artistic Statement
This collage will be a number of things. It will be a time capsule where the viewer can see a
miniature history of the automobile. It will have names of cars that were introduced this year,
as well as others that you might not have seen since childhood. Did your mom take you
to school in a Custom Cruiser?
Secondly, the collage will be a study of typography, an art form
in itself. How many fonts were created especially for the names of cars? How have the lettering
styles changed over the years? Finally, the names themselves will translate into unique memories from
each of us. What car did your parents drive? What was your first car? What car takes you to work
each day? What was your favorite car?
Collecting the Names
I decided immediately to use my Nikon
Coolpix 995 digital camera for this project. I've been using this
camera for the past 2 years and it is lightweight, versatile, and delivers excellent images. Since
I am going to be combining hundreds of images in a collage, 2 or 3 megapixels for each image is more
than I'll ever need. As of January 2004, I'll be using my new Nikon Coolpix 5400.
With a digital camera, I immediately know if I got the nice sharp image I wanted.
I already spent a week looking for a Ford Pinto. If I shot film and made a mistake, I would have to go out
and find a Pinto all over again. I will also save quite a bit of money on film and processing.
You would think collecting the names would be easy. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. I've been to
several dealerships that wouldn't let me take any pictures, even after I explained what I was doing.
Obviously I will never buy a car from them or send anyone else there. I don't know what they're thinking.
Other dealerships were very friendly and helped as much as they could. Everyone who has helped me so far
has been given credit further down on this page.
Dealerships only have the newer cars on my list so I started going to large parking lots like
Wal-Mart and
Target. It seems that people get really nervous
when they see a guy walking around with a notepad, taking pictures of the back ends of cars.
I was taking a picture of some guy's 1992 Corolla in a
K-Mart parking lot when the owner spotted me as he was
leaving the store. He started yelling, "Hey! Hey! Hey! What are you doing to my car?" I was at least
6 feet away from the guy's car. I tried to explain what I was doing and even tried to show him
pictures. He just kept shaking his head, "No! Go away! No pictures of my car!" I couldn't help but notice
that his shopping bags were filled with
Martha
Stewart stuff.
I've been stopped twice by police. Each time, I simply explained what I was doing and they
rolled their eyes or gave a sigh and said, "Okay, that's fine. You may continue." Most of the time,
people just ask me what I'm doing, whether its their car I'm taking a picture of or not. I always explain
it the same way, "Well, I'm making a collage of car names, see?" and I show them my notepad. Usually
they tilt their head to one side and go, "Huh?".
Missing Letters, Missing Cars
Why can't I find any car names that start with U? Can anyone think of any? Other cars I'm looking
for include Javelin, Gremlin, Diplomat, Streamliner, and Electra. If you'd like to help me, please
